John R. was born in 1828 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 John R.'s father was Benjamin Ludwell Bussell and his mother was Mary Or Polly Sanders. His paternal grandparents were William Bussell and Sarah Wyatt. He had six brothers and three sisters, named George W., James M., Calvin P., Benjamin Sanford, Burwell White, Absalom Tivis, Virinda Jane, Sarah Ann and Mary Ann. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.-
