John was born in 1851.1 John's father was Henry Burem and his mother was Nancy Cox Singleton. His paternal grandparents were Henry Burem and Mary Miller. He had a brother and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Henry, Mary K. and Otey. He was the oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers named Absalom Joshua, Paschal King and Peter Grove.-
