James was born about 1796 in Iredell County, NC.1 James' father was William Brotherton and his mother was Esther Bone. His paternal grandfather was John Brotherton; his maternal grandfather was William Bone. He had four brothers and a sister, named Benjamin, John F., George, Henry and Esther. He was the third youngest of the six children.-
