Thomas was born in 1778 in Halifax, NC.1 Thomas' father was Robert Brantley and his mother was Sarah Rorie. His paternal grandparents were Edward Brantley and Martha Pitman; his maternal grandfather was John Rorie. He had a brother and four sisters, named Robert, Elizabeth, Sarah, Martha and Jane. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, John, William and Nancy.-
