Charity was born about 1772 in Halifax, NC.¹ Charity's father was Lewis Brantley and her mother was Martha. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Brantley and Martha Pitman. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Henry Lewis, Benjamin Johnson, Sarah Ann, Mary Pitman, Dolly and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the eight children.
