Mary was born in 1828 in ,Bourbon, Kentucky.1 Mary's father was Augustine Volney Bedford and her mother was Elizabeth Lewis Garrard. Her paternal grandparents were Littleberry Bedford and Mattie Clay. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas J., James G., Jeptha, Littleberry, Benjamin F., Stephen D., Sarah M. and L. B.. She was the oldest of the nine children.-
