John was born in 1866 in ,Bourbon, Kentucky.1 John's father was Edwin P. Bean and his mother was Sarah A. Owen. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Owen and Cynthia Scott. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Lee, Bennet, Cynthia, Mattie and Nancy. He was the third youngest of the seven children.-
