Mary was born on May 10th, 1771 in ,Halifax, North Carolina.1 Mary's father was William Barrow and her mother was Olivia Ruffin. Her paternal grandparents were William Barrow and Priscilla; her maternal grandparents were Robert Ruffin and Anne Bennett. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, William, Bartholomew, Ruffin, Bennett, Ann and Sarah. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
