Sarah was born in 1859 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Sarah's father was Martin Anderson and her mother was Julia Ann Steel. Her maternal grandparents were Reuben Steel and Elizabeth Newberry. She had a brother and two sisters, named Davis S., Amanda V. and Mary M.. She was the oldest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Elizabeth.
