Maud was the daughter of a powerful Saxon Lord, said to be a son ofAethelred "the Unready". She may have gone to Normandy with Edward theConfessor, when he was in exile in Normandy. Whatever the case, Maud andRanulf were apparently married quite awhile before the conquest, as theage of their children would indicate.

NOTE: If Maud's father was a son of Aethelred (according to his likelydate of birth, it would be by Emma of Normandy), then William'sfavoritism towards the Peverel family could easily be explained by thefact that Maud Ingelrica was his cousin.
