  Giselbert, Count in the valley of the Meuse, ruling Masau/Maasgau in what is now Belgium; married 846 Irmgard, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Lothair (grandson of Charlemagne), who granted his son-in-law the Countship of Darnau 863.
  Europaische Stammtafeln I:95 indicates he was Count in Maasgau. Maasgau is Dutch/German for "area of the river Maas" (hence the origin of the name of the historically famous city of Maastricht) which is in English the river Meuse. Maasgau is
  also referred to in English (& French I think) as Mons. The Maas/Meuse/Mons & Mosel/Moselle are NOT the same, athough in their southern parts are not far from each other at Toul, France. The Moselle (if you ever have a chance to take a river
  cruise on the Moselle thru the wine valleys to the Rhine, you will not regret it) does not flow thru Belgium while the Meuse does. Therefore "Count of Moselle" I think is wrong even though I see it in many genealogies on the net & even in
  Gen-Medieval archives. I may be wrong, but I don’t think a Grafschaft/County of Moselle ever existed & people with lack of language skills have mistaken Maasgau to mean Moselle. I see also on the net “Duke of Moselle”, which I think is also
  wrong. The Meuse was in both the Duchies of Upper & Lower Lorraine while the Moselle was in the Duchy of Upper (southern) Lorraine only.
