A forceful woman, Adela took after her father more than his sons did. She administered her husband's lands and played a key role in rebuilding the Cathedral of Chartres in stone. She persuaded her husband to go on Crusade and in his absence became Regent. Through her blood lines, King Stephen was able to make his bid for the English throne.
