Stephen III "Le Sage" (Crusader) was born about 1046 in Blois, Loir-et-Cher, Orleanais/Centre, France . Stephen III "Le Sage" (Crusader)'s father was Theobald III Comte de Champagne & Blois and his mother was Gersende du Maine . His paternal grandparents were Eudes II Comte de Champagne & Blois and Ermengarde de Auvergne ; his maternal grandfather was Herbert I Eveillechien Comte du Maine . He was an only child. He died on May 27th, 1102 in Ramlah, Palestine (on Crusade of 1101) .General Notes
The wealthy and amiable Stephen really had no desire to go on Crusade, but his ambitious wife Adela urged him on. While at the siege of Antioch in the First Crusade in 1098, Stephen, in command, ran away and became a laughingstock. Adela used blackmail and other other threatening tactics to force Stephen to return to the Holy Land to restore his reputation. He did so and redeemed himself in 1101, dying nobly at Ramlah.
THE CRUSADES
By fighting in a Crusade, people believed they could guarantee a place for themselves in heaven and right the wrongs they had committed in their lives. In 1095, Pope Urban II made a speech that affected many people with the message that it was God's will that the Crusades be carried out. As a result, thousands of knights, peasants and even children prepared to march to Jerusalem and fight.
The main goal of the Crusades was to free Jerusalem. That never happened. Only the 1st and 3rd Crusades could be considered somewhat successful. In the 3rd Crusade, Richard the Lionheart conquered Acre, but failed to take Jerusalem. He did, however, obtain a treaty from Saladin to allow pilgrims to enter the holy city. The fighting in the Crusades was ugly and brutal. When Richard I took Acre, 2,700 Muslim prisoners were slaughtered.
