Willis was born in 1805 in Orange Co NC. Willis' father was James Robert Cheek and his mother was Martha "Patty" Estes. His paternal grandparents were James Robert Cheek and Anne Cocke; his maternal grandparents were Thomas III Estes and Elizabeth Burroughs. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James Jr, Robert, Anderson, John Glenn, Burroughs, Martha 'Patsy', Abi, Susannah 'Sooky' and Nancy.-
