  Became John of Gaunt's mistress in 1388. All their children were born *before* they were married. John married her almost thirty years later after their relationship started as he was still married to Constanza, Queen of Castile. That is why John and Catherine's children were not 'of Lancaster' as the children from the previous two marriages; they werenamed "Beaufort' after the castle where they were born. They were
  ligitimated later by the Pope.
