Mary Jane was born in 1857 in , , Missouri.  Mary Jane's father was James L. Young and her mother was Harriet. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Cornelius, Ransom, Samuel, Fereba, Cornelia E., Sarah Jane, Susan, Dora and Louisa B..  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
