Leander was born in 1823 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Leander's father was Robert Wright and his mother was Priscilla Galbraith. His maternal grandparents were John Galbraith and Martha Larkins. He had two brothers named Joseph and Samuel Houston. He was the oldest of the three children.-
