Matthew's father was Benjamin Williamson and his mother was Martha Branch. His paternal grandparents were Francis Williamson and Ann; his maternal grandparents were Francis Branch and Elizabeth. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Stephen, James, Lewis, Sarah, Elizabeth and Lucy.-
