Martha was born about 1847 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. Martha's father was James Whaley and her mother was Mary Ann Hedges. Her paternal grandparents were Leland Whaley and Mary Or Polly Talbott; her maternal grandfather was John Hedges. She had two sisters named Tabitha and Fannie. She was the second oldest of the three children.-
