Nicholas F. was born on July 15th, 1834 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Nicholas F.'s father was Jacob Wax and his mother was Susan Elizabeth Galbraith. His paternal grandparents were Henry Wax and Margaret Geschwind; his maternal grandparents were William Galbraith and Ellen. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry Geschwind, William Caldwell, Stokley, James H., Elizabeth E., Sidney and Susan Ann. He was the youngest of the eight children.-
