Martha was born about 1810 in Halifax County, North Carolina.  Martha's father was Peter Turner and her mother was Susannah Doggett.  Her maternal grandparents were Jeremiah Doggett and Mary Overstreet. She had a sister named Jane.  She was the younger of the two children.
