Sarah was born in May 1850 in , Bourbon, Kentucky.  Sarah's father was Samson D. Talbot and her mother was Sarah Ann Stimmons.  Her paternal grandfather was Demoval Talbot; her maternal grandparents were Martin Stimmons and Charlotte Glasscock. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry D., Sampson, Martin Stimmons, Albert R., Hetty M. and Ida R..  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
