Thomas' father was Thomas Stanhop and his mother was Margaret Port. His paternal grandparents were Michael Stanhop and Anna Rawson; his maternal grandparents were John Port and Elizabeth Gifford. He had two brothers and a sister, named Edward, John and Anne.
