Solomon M. was born in Tennessee. Solomon M.'s father was Robert W. Smalling and his mother was Nancy Agnes Oliver. His maternal grandparents were John Oliver and Mary. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Marmaduke W., Robert Washington, Martin, Samuel, Abraham G., Elizabeth, Mary W. and Susannah. He died in 1903.
