James P. was born in 1846.  James P.'s father was Benjamin Jackson Shipley and his mother was Barbara Ann Buttes.  His paternal grandparents were Adam Shipley and Ellen Holt. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Adam B., Ambrose B., Elizabeth B., Sarah C. and Margaret A..  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 84 in 1930 in Greene County, Tennessee.
