Frederick B. was born in 1822 in Tennessee. Frederick B.'s father was Joshua Shipley and his mother was Mary Strickler. His paternal grandparents were Eli Shipley and Elizabeth Kingston; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Strickler and Christina Burner. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Benjamin, Reuben, Joshua, Rachel, Salina, Mary, Nancy Winifred and Christena E.. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.-
