Adam B. was born in 1834. Adam B.'s father was Adam Shipley and his mother was Ellen Holt. His paternal grandparents were Eli Shipley and Elizabeth Kingston. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Benjamin Jackson, James B., Ambrose B., Louisa B., Sarah A., Mary Eleanor, Martha Elizabeth and Lydia B.. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
