Alma Jessie Rachel was born on February 6th, 1908 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Alma Jessie Rachel's father was Richard Baxter Rutledge and her mother was Hannah Lillie Amanda Shoemaker. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Kine Rutledge and Mary Jane Norman; her maternal grandparents were George A. Shoemaker and Amanda E. Arnold. She had three brothers and six sisters, named George Washington, Fostine Roy, James William, Cora Mandy Mae, Mary Ellen, Callie Lucy, Kate Tessie, Cecile Mattie Pearl and Bonnie Virginia. She was the third youngest of the ten children.-
