Henderson was born about 1827 in , , Alabama. Henderson's father was Samuel M. Rowan and his mother was Rebecca Blessing. His paternal grandparents were William Rowan and Elizabeth Ellison; his maternal grandparents were Jacob Blessing and Elizabeth Messersmith. He had four brothers and a sister, named William A., James M., Logan, John and Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the six children.-
