Mary was born in 1836 in , Harrison, Kentucky. Mary's father was Willis Rankin and her mother was Nancy Howard. Her maternal grandparents were Elijah Howard and Smith. She had a brother and four sisters, named Atberry, Margaret, Sarah, Nancy and Elsey. She was the second oldest of the six children.-
