Janet's father was Edmund Pilkington and her mother was Elizabeth Boothe. Her paternal grandparents were John Pilkington and Margaret Verdon; her maternal grandfather was Thomas Boothe. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, Edmund, Roger, Thomas, Elizabeth and Emma.
