Jonathan was born in Pennsylvania. Jonathan's father was Henry Nichols and his mother was Elizabeth. His paternal grandfather was Jonathan Nichols. He had four brothers named Charles, Henry, James and Jeremiah. He had a half-brother named William. He died in 1774 in Talbot County, Maryland.
