Reason was born in 1845 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.  Reason's father was Jonathan T. Nelson and his mother was Nancy Delaney.  His paternal grandparents were Reason Nelson and Jane Thomas. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Jessee, Moses, William, James, John, Isaac, Sarah and Martha.  He died at the age of 64 in 1909.
