Samuel L. was born on November 27th, 1845 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Samuel L.'s father was Wright Mullins and his mother was Elzira Dalton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mullins and Susannah Light; his maternal grandparents were John Dalton and Patience Light. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Michael P., Amos K., Elbert M., Wright, Judah and Susannah. He was the oldest of the eight children.-
