Montgomery was born about 1462 in Cubely, Derby, England. Montgomery's father was Nicholas Montgomery and his mother was Joan Longford. His paternal grandparents were Nicholas Montgomery and Eleanor Cheresey; his maternal grandparents were Nicholas Longford and Margery. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Nicholas, Thomas, Walter, Margaret, Ann, Katherine and Isabel. He was the second oldest of the eight children.-
