Beverly was born in 1796 in , Halifax, Virginia. Beverly's father was Beverly Mays and his mother was Sarah Stubblefield. His paternal grandparents were William Mays and Sara Smith; his maternal grandparents were George Stubblefield and Keziah. He had three brothers named William, Fleming and Christopher. He was the second oldest of the four children. He died about 1856 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.-
