Mahala was born on January 2nd, 1806 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee. Mahala's father was Thomas Martin and her mother was Elizabeth. She had seven brothers and a sister, named James, John, Thomas, Aaron, Paschal, Absalom, Abijah and Elizabeth. She was the third oldest of the nine children.
