Pleasant was born in 1848 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Pleasant's father was Nelson Manis and his mother was Elizabeth. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Thurman, Gaines, Clinton, Asa, Jane, Mary, Derna, Martha, Elizabeth and Eliza.
