Ida was born in 1852 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Ida's father was Pleasant Manis and her mother was Sarah. Her paternal grandparents were John Manis and Celia. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named James, Landon C., Andrew J., Nancy, Manila, Melvina, Susan, Catherine, Esther, Sarah A., Johana and Mary F.. She was the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.-
