Allen was born in March 1880 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Allen's father was John Manis and his mother was Martha Gonce. His paternal grandparents were John Manis and Celia; his maternal grandparents were Vance Gonce and Martha Or Patsy Davis. He had seven brothers and eight sisters, named Calloway, John, George, Vance, Tivis, Patton, Christopher, Susannah, Elizabeth, Frances, Missa E., Lou Vesta, Mary, Martha and Lillie. He was the youngest of the sixteen children.-
