Robert was born in 1847 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Robert's father was Robert Kyle and his mother was Rachel Gillenwater. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Gillenwater and Mary Mallory Wilkins. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, James, Shelby, Jane, Martha and Diana. He was the second youngest of the eight children.-
