Mary E. was born on January 4th, 1835 in , Harrison, Kentucky. Mary E.'s father was Jesse Knight and her mother was Permelia Ann Bowen. Her paternal grandparents were Shadrack Knight and Margaret Holder; her maternal grandparents were Robert Bowen and Delilah Trundle. She had three brothers and five sisters, named John Robert, James Alexander, Jesse, Sarah Ann, Melvina C., Pamelia Jennie, Martha E. and Alice Love. She was the second oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 90 on November 12th, 1925 in , Henderson, Kentucky.-
