Mary was born in 1845 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Mary's father was Jacob Klepper and her mother was Mary Loudermilch.  Her maternal grandfather was Loudermilch. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Nathan, Simeon, Benjamin, James, Tivis, Elizabeth and Jane.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
