Katherine was born in 1850 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Katherine's father was William Klepper and her mother was Nancy Courtney. Her paternal grandparents were Peter Klepper and Catherine Myers. She had two sisters named Mary and Jane. She was the youngest of the three children.
