Giles' father was William Joyner and his mother was Elinor Smalley. His paternal grandparents were William Joyner and Mary; his maternal grandfather was Giles Smalley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Israel, Lewis, Moses, William, Ann and Elizabeth.
