Cynthia was born in 1842 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee. Cynthia's father was Sanford Johnson and her mother was Louisa Lebow. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Johnson and Barbara Hutcheson; her maternal grandparents were John Lebow and Catherine Gray. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Larkin, James, Jacob, Elbert, Martha Ann, Lucinda and Sarah. She was the second youngest of the nine children.-
