Godlove was born on June 11th, 1798 in , Shenandoah, Virginia. Godlove's father was Gottlieb Huffmaster and his mother was Sarah Louderback. His maternal grandparents were Johan David Lauterbach and Maria Elizabetha Klein. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, John, Daniel, Jonathan, Barbara, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
