Sarah was born in 1856 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Sarah's father was Robert A. Hounshell and her mother was Elizabeth Darter.  Her maternal grandmother was Sarah. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Robert Nicholas, Oregon, Ann, Nancy Holsten and Mary Ann.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
