John was born in 1760 in Earl Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. John's father was John Grove and his mother was Anne. His paternal grandparents were Peter Grove and Barbara. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jacob, David, Grove, Nancy C. and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Mary.-
