Silas A. was born about 1852 in , Owen, Indiana. Silas A.'s father was Josephus Goff and his mother was Anne Clark. His paternal grandparents were William Goff and Mary Oliver; his maternal grandparents were Nathaniel Clark and Hannah Rock. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Hugh, William, John R., James, Polly Ann, Elizabeth, Louise, Emily and Matilda. He was the second youngest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Isaac G., Joseph B. and Lucinda.-
